BUILDING WORLDS
The Building Worlds Series is my conceptualization of time lapse paintings. At first glance these works resemble captivating cityscapes, but on closer examination metaphorical worlds spanning eras and symbolizing our impact on our planet emerge. I refer to these worlds as AnthropoceneScapes because they represent the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment. My works convey messages about both the future and the past, as I juxtapose crumbling structures with elements that represent the acceleration of our modern consumptive expansion. Through the intriguing revelations that come with contemplation of my paintings, I seek to elicit reflection about the impact of our activities on Earth and our urgent need for action. Representing the "Invisible Crime" of Climate Change in an Age of Post-Truth
My process for this series builds on an approach I developed called artistic propagation that is similar to that of propagation both in our natural and ideological world. Using artistic propagation, I digitally harvest elements from images of my finished paintings to create unique archival collage papers for use in my new paintings. I transform these papers using an array of techniques including monoprinting, photography, burning, rubbings, and sgraffito. In a sense, each of my acrylic and collage paintings contains the “genes” of its ancestors. And so, they visually and metaphorically convey a sense of movement, progression and the flow of time. Each painting emerges as a member of a new generation, as distinct techniques and varying compositional elements give each descendant work a unique voice. My hope is these voices will inspire conversation
